Asymmetrical Fast Transients

Dogfight Asymmetrical Fast Transients One of the core concepts that influenced Colonel John Boyd's thinking process and, most recently my own. I have been studying change (and therefore resistance to change) for some weeks now. It started in earnest as I prepared to present an overview of Constraints Management at the DoD Performance Symposium just outside Washington DC. For those new to SKI on Throughput, Constraints Management is the official model H. William Dettmer created when he injected Boyd's thinking into the Logical Thinking Process of Eli Goldratt's Theory of Constraints.
FYI: For those in Northeast Ohio (or those willing to travel here), Dettmer and I are presenting the six day workshop on The Logical Thinking Process in Ohio from July 28th to August 3rd.
It has been said that those with the "quickest rate of change" survive. Not so quick? Burnt toast! But too often we in leadership roles forget the concept of trust. Mutual trust. Change cannot happen without it. In the case of a fighter jet, the pilot must trust his equipment to execute a fast transient... more so in directing the people of a business organization. Driving Results

SKI on Driving Results Are you driving Results or Miss Daisy? This morning I awoke to the remnants of a dream of driving nails... and over coffee tried to make sense of that which seemed weird (at best). I happened (was it really happenstance?) to grab a copy of Selling Power magazine. Which of course contained some good material on producing results. By the way, if you are still using commissions in an attempt to produce lasting results, it won't work. But I digress... From my experiences "driving results" for over twenty years, looking back, the biggest roadblock (repeatedly!) is the power of the "assumption" to stall all forward progress. I see it most every day. Day in and sadly day out. Want to get my attention? Invite me to a project and then tell me we can ignore "this or that" component. It won't work. If it does, it is so "in the face of the odds" that it cannot be duplicated. And, if it cannot be duplicated, then I am not interested. W. Edwards Deming covered this fact [paraphrasing], "Success is 94% the result of your system." No results? No system. Or more likely, the wrong system. Status Quo

Fighting Status Quo Fighting Status Quo Over on the "new & improved" web site, I was explaining "People first" and touched on the concept of Status Quo. For most of my consulting career, the first option on my quotes for new business deals is this odd sounding selection. Why? People become entrenched and often take on that attitude, "If the solution is not invented here, it won't work here." How stupid. Yet most of us are guilty of that mistake. And worse! But let's take a closer look to the real cause: change. Mr or Ms Business Owner is fighting "the good fight" as we say, but there is less and less profit left at the end of each month. If any! So they look around and decide that if GM can lay off major portions of a highly skilled workforce, then maybe we should too. Then I call and suggest I can help. "No thanks." How stupid! You know absolutely nothing about GM's situation (especially if you are getting it third hand from the media) or as I call them, "constraints", and yet you are happy to duplicate a very flawed methodology. Better still, you will explain it as "common sense" and tell your significant other that everyone is struggling. "It's the economy!" Wrong There are plenty of companies making money. Hiring people. Expanding operations. And generally very enthusiastic about their future. Especially given the fact that many a competitor has already conceded the war. Think about this scenario for a minute... 60 whole seconds: let's put a face to it by holding up an example: salesforce dot com. Ticker symbol: $CRM Change Markets change. Yet there you are, clinging to Status Quo as your economic boat catches fire and begins to sink. How is it we decide to jettison personnel at exactly the moment we need "all hands on deck" to fight the good fight? Wrongheaded thinking, mostly. When you see examples of "common practices" like lay offs as cost cutting measures, that is exactly the moment you need some uncommon common sense. That is exactly what I bring to the table.
